Mary-Alice Brady, Lawyer Turned Entrepreneur

Massachusetts-based entrepreneur Mary-Alice Brady began her career as a corporate lawyer. After graduating magna cum laude from Boston College Law School, she joined Ropes & Gray as an attorney, handling leverage buyouts, venture capital financings, and general company representation. Over the next seven years, she built a great reputation for herself, but knew that something was missing and wanted to do more. With less than two years away from becoming a partner, Brady left Ropes & Gray and moved to Fidelity Investments, where she served as vice president, associate general counsel, and corporate secretary. While working at Fidelity was a great learning experience for her, it still wasn’t what she really wanted to do. Subsequently, she spent two years at venture capital firm General Catalyst, focusing on their seed, venture, and growth investments.

After more than a decade in the corporate world, Brady finally decided to take the leap into entrepreneurship. In 2010, she founded mosaicHUB, an online community and resource center for entrepreneurs around the world. Brady got the idea for mosaicHUB from her numerous years of experience practicing law. While at Ropes & Gray and Fidelity, she saw several “smart, driven people slowly lose their passion and become complacent.” Similarly, her time at General Catalyst introduced her to many early-stage entrepreneurs who were wasting time on unnecessary things. Hence, Brady started mosaicHUB because she “wanted to see these entrepreneurs succeed, as well as to encourage more people to explore entrepreneurship as a way to follow their true passion.”

Brady’s own entrepreneurial journey was neither easy nor straightforward. Still, she has no regrets even if it took her a long time to make the transition from lawyer to entrepreneur. Brady says she’s proud of herself for getting to where she is right now. And she should be, as she was recently named one of Boston Business Journal’s 2012 40 Under 40.
