Music has always been an important part of Faith Gonsalves’ life. Singing in school, college, and beyond, she learned how to cooperate in a group, gained self-confidence, and made many friends. In 2008, she founded non-profit organization Music Basti to share the gift of music with at-risk children in Delhi, India. Believing in the power of music to foster community building and personal development, Gonsalves, her friends, and Music Basti volunteers reach out to kids through participative music education programs. Their goal is to promote self-confidence and creativity through interaction, to give these children another way to express themselves, and to teach them teamwork and collaboration.
A recipient of the 2011 Karamveer Puraskaar National Award for Social Entrepreneurship, Music Basti also raises awareness on social global issues such as health, education, gender equity, and more. The organization has now partnered with companies and other non-profits to fund research and documentation, activities for the children, and training for the artists and volunteers.
