Alex Moazed, founder and CEO of Applico, started the leading mobile apps development company out of his dorm room in 2009 while still a junior at Babson College. He used his personal credit card to create the NYC Transit Blackberry app, which became a bestseller in the travel category.
Within the first year of founding Applico, Moazed had to make an important decision about the future of the company. With Applico offering both product (building its own apps) and service (building apps for other companies) at the time, Moazed knew he had to focus on just one business model. “It is hard to do one thing well and pretty near impossible to do two things well unless you are Jack Dorsey,” he says.
Realizing there was a client need for product and design services, Moazed chose to make Applico a service-based business. In the fall of 2010, the company moved into its NYC office, which quickly became too small after just less than a year. Today, Applico’s clients include Google, Mayo Clinic, and ASICS.
