Say “Famous Amos” and the first thing that comes to mind are sinfully scrumptious chocolate chip cookies. Wallace “Wally” Amos, Jr. is the mastermind behind these sweet treats although he is also known for co-founding Uncle Wally’s muffins, running the Chip & Cookie brand and its stores in Long Island, New York, and hosting an adult learning program known as Learn to Read.
His recipe for chocolate chip cookies was inspired by his aunt’s unique recipe. After serving in the US Air Force, he became a secretary at the William Morris Agency and as a testament to his great people skills he became its first African-American talent agent. He attracted new clients, which included Simon & Garfunkel and Diana Ross & the Supremes, by sending them chocolate chip cookies and his invitation for a visit.
In 1975, Amos opened his first Famous Amos cookie store in Los Angeles, California upon the encouragement of his friends – and the rest is a cookie lover’s history.
