David M. Overton: Perhaps The Father of the Modern Cheesecake

David Michael Overton may or may not have a sweet tooth but he is enjoying sweet success with his company, the Cheesecake Factory, Inc. In 1978, he opened his first restaurant, also known as the Cheesecake Factory, in Beverly Hills, California. He wanted to demonstrate the profitability of a specialty restaurant as well as provide his target customers with signature cheesecakes. His restaurant also set the pattern for the next branches including the wide range of cheesecakes, eclectic menu, and large portions.

Overton became not only its founder but also its President, Chief Executive Officer, and Chairman of the Board. While it may be a handful for many people, he has succeeded in juggling the jobs, a fact evidenced by the fact that the Cheesecake Factory is the United States’ ninth largest restaurant company based on market capitalization.

The Cheesecake Factory, Inc. is also a distributor of cheesecakes in the United States. It has 185 full-service restaurants with 165 operating under the Cheesecake Factory brand while others are under the Grand Lux Café and RockSugar Pan Asian Kitchen brands.
